THE Brunei Halal range of products has successfully launched in Singapore and is now available at the Lion City's biggest supermarket chain, NTUC FairPrice Cooperative Ltd.
Kerry Logistics, which is part of a joint-venture with Ghanim International Food Corporation, in a press statement released yesterday, announced that the Brunei Halal brand is now available in Singapore's National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) FairPrice, and is the first supermarket chain to offer the Brunei Halal products outside of the Sultanate.
"We are delighted to have our first success in Singapore with NTUC FairPrice so soon after the launch of the new joint venture and we are confident we will see further opportunities in Asia and Europe as we roll out the Brunei Halal range of products," said Antony Greenstein, director of Global Business, Kerry FSDA, in the statement.
Kerry FSDA, the trading arm of Kerry Logistics, and the Brunei government established Ghanim in July last year to provide a comprehensive range of products and services for both Muslims and non-Muslims.
Ghanim is working with global manufacturers to make products that suit local demand that will need approval by Brunei's halal certification body before manufacturing and market them worldwide through Kerry Logistics supply chain, under the Brunei Halal brand.
"Services include sourcing, distribution and marketing of Brunei Halal food products.
"Kerry Logistics will be involved in international freight forwarding and integrated logistics management to ensure compliance with strict halal standards," the statement said.
The government of Brunei aims to develop the brand to become one of the major players in the global halal industry, from food and cosmetics to pharmaceuticals and lifestyle.
More than 20 products including cup noodles, noodle nuggets, chocolate, potato chips, prawn crackers, cookies, cheese puffs and sparkling juices, are available at many of its supermarkets and stores.
NTUC Fairprice was founded by Singapore's labour movement in 1973, with a social mission to moderate the cost of living in Singapore, their website stated.
The first NTUC Welcome supermarket at Toa Payoh (a suburb in Singapore) was opened by then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew on July 22, 1973.
In 1983, NTUC Welcome merged with the Singapore Employees Cooperative to form NTUC Fairprice Cooperative Ltd.
From one supermarket, FairPrice has grown to become Singapore's largest retailer, with a network of more than 230 outlets comprising FairPrice supermarkets, FairPrice Finest, FairPrice Xtra, FairPrice Xpress and Cheers convenience stores.
Ghanim is 50 per cent owned by the Brunei government and Hong Kong's Kerry FSDA.
The Brunei Halal brand is owned by the government's Wafirah Holdings.
