The Conference is to be held at the world-renowned Langkawi Island in North Malaysia during 8-11 July 2012. The place and the dates were specially chosen to coincide with the birthday of Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed, an internationally acclaimed statesman and former Prime Minister. He is likely to be at the event as the distinguished speaker to officiate the launching of the World Association of Islamic Business Schools (WAIBS) at the UUM’s OYA Graduate School of Business and to also inaugurate the UUM Islamic Business School.
You are invited to participate in the 2012 Foundation of Islamic Finance Conference (FIFC) with the theme "Ethical Dimensions in Islamic Business: Realities and Challenges". In 2006, a group of internationally renowned and published scholars worked with the industry professionals in Australia on a series of research activities on Islamic Finance with an Australian Research Council grant for 4 years. Through this work, the first Foundation of Islamic Finance Conference (FIFC) was organized in 2009 at the NCEIS. The second FIFC was held in Dubai in 2010; third in 2011 by University Putra Malaysia. A related conference on Ethics in Financial Transactions was held in September 2011 at The University of Melbourne.
This series of conferences has gained support from a number of eminent colleges, universities and financial/research organizations involved in Islamic Banking, Insurance, and Finance attracting good participation from both academic and professional sectors. Each conference has led to (i) publication of selected papers in journals and a book publication by Edward Elgar UK-USA. The book publisher has launched a Foundation of Islamic Finance series with the first volume in 2012. Two more books, one on Islamic banking and another on Islamic sukuk securities are out in 2012.
The aim of this research-based series is to encourage open discussion leading to quality publications: authentic books, refereed journal articles, doctoral proposal discussions and conference proceedings. All papers will be carefully peer-reviewed by practitioners and scholars in order to provide a forum for advancing this new niche Islamic finance being taught in tertiary institutions and managing a new industry.
Islamic Finance has grown rapidly over its short 50-year history. The total assets managed by some 500 institutions are reported to be large, but no reliable figures are available from 76 countries. With about two-thirds of the markets being managed in Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur has emerged as the major hub for Islamic financial markets although there are six other sizeable markets elsewhere.
The chief guest is the honourable Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad, an internationally renowned statesman, and thinker respected across the world. There are several eminent professionals and scholars of international repute who will be presenting their addresses and views on the theme of the Conference.
