TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Since 2009, the Jakarta State University (UNJ) has been receiving US$ 38 million from the Islamic Development Bank (IDB). "The grant has been utilized to build two towers with 12 floors and is expected to be completed by 2013,” said UNJ Rector Assistant, Zainal Rafli, yesterday. (2/9).
Two new buildings to be constructed next to the Rector’s Office will have rooms for practice and lecture classes.
Besides the building, the grant will also be used to send 25 lecturers to the Netherlands, Japan, and Australia to study for a PhD degree.
UNJ currently has 956 lecturers, 33 percent of whom have PhD degrees. “About 50 percent of our lecturers have masters degrees, and the rest hold bachelor degrees,” Zainal said.
The lecturers having bachelor degrees are mostly those who have been teaching for many years and will retire soon.
Suryadi, UNJ Assistant Rector in charge of Administration, said IDB’s grant is not particularly intended for faculties teaching Islamic studies. “However, we have an Islamic Study major that will become an Islamic Study Center,” he said.
