FINANCE - KUR - Mandiri Loans to Microbusinesses Hit Rp 6.5t

Jakarta. Bank Mandiri distributed Rp 6.5 trillion ($721.5 million) in loans to microbusinesses in 2010, 45 percent higher than the previous year, the bank announced in a statement on Sunday.

“Mandiri sees a lot of potential within the micro sector. We want to take a more active role in developing the sector that helps drive Indonesia’s economic development,” said Tardi, Bank Mandiri’s senior vice president for microbusiness development. Mandiri, Indonesia’s largest bank by assets, distributed loans to around 545,000 microbusiness in 2010 with about 4 percent in non-performing loans. The maximum platform of the loan, which is targeted for micro and household businesses, is Rp 100 million.

Companies that employ between five and 10 people are considered microbusinesses.

About 49.5 percent of the total portfolio, or Rp 3.2 trillion, was distributed to the trade sector. The next-largest portion went to the services sector, which received Rp 2.6 trillion, or 40.4 percent.

Of the 16 million micro- and small businesses in Indonesia, Tardi said, only about 30 percent of them had accessed the bank’s microfinance facilities. He said that number left him positive that Mandiri could grow its microfinance distribution in the future.

In 2011, Mandiri plans to add 400 micro-outlets to increase people’s access to the bank’s microfinance services. Tardi said the addition would give Mandiri 1,900 micro-outlets across the country.

Mandiri distributed Rp 198.7 trillion in loans, according to the bank’s Web site, with Rp 84.2 trillion, or 42.4 percent, going toward corporate loans. Commercial loans accounted for Rp 57.5 trillion, or 29 percent, while commercial loans amounted to Rp 28.6 trillion, or 14.4 percent.

Loans to microbusinesses totaled Rp 6.5 trillion, just 3.3 percent of Mandiri’s total distributed loans.
