BRUNEI - BIBD seeks 'global Islamic bank' tag

BANK Islam Brunei Darussalam (BIBD) is seeking to improve service in a bid to become a "global Islamic bank", Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources and BIBD Chairman yesterday said.

At the bank's annual dinner yesterday, Pehin Dato Hj Yahya praised the bank for bagging the "Best Global Corporate Sukuk" award and The Banker's "Deal of the Year 2010 Awards in the Islamic Finance Category".

"These achievements are in line with our ultimate goal in which we hope to position the bank onto an even higher level and gain recognition as a global Islamic bank," he said, noting the bank's employees are a key ingredient in BIBD's success.

The minister also praised BIBD's efforts in introducing its credit card care programme, which he credits for helping customers manage their financial obligations. (full story)

He also applauded the bank on its corporate social responsibility initiatives last year, including joining a charity project benefiting 50 households in all of the four districts during Ramadhan as well as for organising talks on Islamic financial planning and cultivating a savings culture and better financial management among the public.

"Though this is only the beginning, it is hoped that this can further raise our spirit for us to continue our efforts in providing quality products and services that meet international standards," he said.

The minister also highlighted BIBD's three-year corporate strategy with the goal to improve the quality of service, including providing a more conducing working environment for its staff and improving the quality of staff training.

In addition, Pehin Dato Hj Yahya said that he hoped these efforts would help boost the motivation for all staff, which would then translate to better quality service towards customers.

He hoped all these efforts would make BIBD not just the "bank of choice" for the public, but also the "bank of choice" to work at.

BIBD Acting Managing Director Javed Ahmad also thanked the bank's staff for a successful 2010.

The annual dinner was held at The Empire Hotel & Country Club's Indera Samudra Grand Hall.

A total of 57 BIBD employees received awards for long service, some having served for over 20 years.

Certificates were also presented to BIBD's Corporate Social Responsibility committee members for their dedication and commitment in steering the bank's CSR initiatives.
