INDONESIA - MICRO FINANCE - Bank Rakyat Syariah’s micro financing more than doubles

JAKARTA: PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia Syariah's outstanding micro loans were recorded at IDR1 trillion in September, rising more than doubled compared to that at end-2010.

Outstanding micro loans at end-2010 was IDR400 billion, said Khairullah, Chief of Retail Banking at BRI Syariah.  (source)

The bank, a subsidiary of PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia Tbk, expects to keep disbursing fund to micro businesses and to reach the target of total outstanding micro financing of IDR1.2 trillion by end of this year.

BRI Syariah will keep multiplying the disbursement to reach the target of IDR3 trillion in 2012. It will increase the number of micro teams, each consisting of four marketing staff, two collecting staffs, and an analyst.

“We want to make another 150 micro teams, and we will have 300 micro teams at end of 2012,” said Khairullah.

Once the bank creates more micro teams, the portion of micro financing will be 20%, compared to 14% of the total IDR7 trillion financing portfolio.

He added that BRI Syariah has no special focus on certain sector for disbursement. The bank disburses financing evenly to various sectors, including convection, tofu producers, and small merchants.

“Micro financing has a big market since the industries at the moment are dominated with medium and smaller scale businesses. Amid Indonesian economy, which is predicted to grow 6.5%, micro and small businesses will keep growing,” he said.

In providing banking service to customers, BRI Syariah relaunched its official website Tuesday. It has several features, including calculator to count the installments of precious metal ownership, which has been one of BRI’s prime products.

The calculator can also count the installments of housing loans and yield of time deposits. Moreover, the site also shows updated information on domestic gold price, referring to global price at PT Aneka Tambang and Reuters. (20/t04/ags)
