BRUNEI - EVENTS - 3-day Islamic finance forum from May 15

www.bt.com.bn -AN INTERNATIONAL conference on Islamic finance that aims to further the country's knowledge on the sector is set to be held this month.

In a press conference yesterday at the Sultan Sharif Ali Islamic University, Dr Fadzliwati Mohiddin, the dean of the Faculty of Business and Management Science said that the International Conference on Islamic Finance 2012 (ICiF 2012) and 6th Regional Shari'ah Scholars Dialogue (MCSN 6) aim to contribute to the devleopment of Islamic banking and finance as well as increase public awareness of its importance.

He also said that other objectives of the conference, to be held from May 15 to 17, were to form partnerships and combine knowledge in the field, to develop the syariah perimetres for application and investment issue in takaful, and to refine aspects of syariah in Islamic banking. Scholars and academicians from Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia and Indonesia are set to present 20 papers during the conference.

The papers will tackle issues on sukuk, Al-Kafalah, Mashalah, Waqf management and others.

The conference will be presented in three languages: Malay, English and Arabic.

According to Dr Abdul Nasir Hj Abdul Rani, director for Postgraduate Studies & Research of UNISSA, the dialogue will bring together various other syariah scholars from Southeast Asia such as Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines and to some extent Thailand.

The scholars will have the opportunity to discuss in detail issues of breakthroughs in the contract applications of Syari'ah in Ijarah Mausufah Fi Zimmah (when an unidentified asset is used for forward lease), especially in the structure of banking products and Islamic capital market. The dialogue will also discuss in detail the syariah issues in Islamic banking and Islamic capital market.

Registration is open to the public in Brunei and overseas.
