INDONESIA - IN MEMORIAM - Sofyan Harahap Syafri dies

www.bisnis.com - JAKARTA: Indonesia lost one of his best men in the field of Islamic economics, Sofyan Syafri Harahap, who died at the age of 56 years in the RSCM at around 20:30 pm last night.
Commissioner of State Bank Indonesia Sharia (Islamic BNI) and the Program Director of Islamic Economics and Finance University Trisaksi Rahmatullah returned to after battling colon cancer disease since last year.
During his life, men born in South Tapanuli, North Sumatra in 1956 to devote this much time to the development of Islamic financial world in particular.  (source)

The second edition of Sharing magazine "Australian edtion 02/2010", contains this interesting article on Hotel Sofyan Shariah- Jakarta.

In the last ten years there have been many businesses in Indonesia which carries the “Shariah” label, and it has become a more commonly used term to label the business.  It started in the financial industry, with the addition of Shariah label such as Shariah banking, Shariah insurance, Shariah capital markets, Shariah leasing, etc. Along with the growth of the certification in Shariah compliance, the trend grows to many businesses outside the financial industry.

BANKING - BRI may merge banks if acquisition succeeds (Agroniaga - Bukopin)

JAKARTA: The largest bank by lending, state-owned BRI may merge its newly-acquired subsidiaries, Bank Agroniaga, and Bank Bukopin, if the planned acquisition of a majority stake in Bukopin has succeeded, president director Sofyan Basir said Thursday.

He explained the action would be necessary to comply with the BI regulation on single presence.
