JAKARTA: Publicly listed bank BII signed an agreement with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the World Bank affiliate for the private sector, on Wednesday to enhance the bank’s products and services for women entrepreneurs to help women to get easier access to financing for their businesses.
“IFC will provide advisory service for BII in developing small and medium enterprises [SMEs] for women entrepreneurs in Indonesia,” the bank president director Ridha Wirakusumah said at a press conference in Jakarta on Thursday.
He also said the women enterprises program was in line with BII’s ongoing expansion program where currently the bank was aggressively opening new outlets and expanding its clientele across Indonesia. The women’s market still posed one of the most lucrative opportunities that had not yet been optimalized by the bank.
“It is one of the best areas we are looking into,” he said, adding that BII targeted to open 200 new branches within the next three years across Indonesia.
IFC vice president for human resources and communications Dorothy Berry said that women represented a significant market opportunity for commercial banks as they were currently underserviced with financial products particularly in emerging markets.
“Despite their important role, women entrepreneurs remain an underrepresented client group in the loan portfolios of many banks,” she said. — JP
