"Total aset tumbuh 40 persen dalam 5 tahun," kata Deputi Gubernur Bank Indonesia (BI), Halim Alamsyah, di sela-sela acara The 2nd D-8 Working Group on The Development of Islamic Financial Services Industry, di Jakarta, Jumat, 11 November 2011.

Berdasarkan catatan Bank Indonesia, aset perbankan syariah pada September sudah mencapai Rp 126 triliun, tumbuh 46,55 persen dibandingkan periode yang sama tahun lalu yang hanya Rp 85,97 triliun. Aset tersebut terdiri dari Rp 123 triliun Bank Umum Syariah dan Unit Usaha Syariah. Sedangkan aset Bank Pembiayaan Rakyat Syariah (BPRS) sebesar Rp 3 triliun. Kondisi ini lebih baik dibandingkan pertumbuhan aset perbankan syariah di negara lain yang hanya 10-15 persen.

Keuangan syariah tumbuh pesat di negara-negara D-8 yang terditi dari Bangladesh, Mesir, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan dan Turki. Indonesia berupaya menggali potensi keuangan syariah di negara-negara yang masyoritas penduduknya Muslim tersebut.

Lebih lanjut dia mengatakan, perkembangan tersebut menempatkan perbankan syariah di Indonesia di rangking keempat dunia. "Masih di bawah Iran, Malaysia, dan Saudi Arabia," kata dia.

Sebab, kata Halim, tatanan perbankan syariah di Indonesia sudah cukup baik. Misalnya dengan adanya Dewan Syariah Nasional. "Jadi, fatwa datang dari DSN. Sedangkan di negara lain, fatwa dari masing-masing bank," ujarnya.

Selain itu, dengan fatwa yang lebih baik, menghindari hal-hal spekulatif dan jaminan pembiayaannya jelas. "Pengembangan sumber daya manusia juga terencana dengan baik," kata dia. "Pilar lainnya, potensi ekonomi Indonesia yang luar biasa," ujarnya.

Hal ini membuat banyak pengusaha asing asal Kuwait dan Dubai yang datang ke Indonesia yang minati bisnis perbankan syariah. "Beberapa tahun lalu ada delegasi besar yang datang ke Indonesia. Mereka belum menyampaikan apa yang diinginkan. Tapi sudah terlihat, mereka ingin sekali berbisnis ekonomi syariah," kata dia.
