INDONESIA - BANKING - BRI Syariah to open 150 new offices to boost credits

JAKARTA: PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia Syariah plans to open 150 new offices next year, aiming at reaching 60% growth target in loan disbursement.

The bank will expand its network in small cities of some islands in Indonesia.

Most of those offices will be supporting branch (KCP) since this type of office spends low operating cost, said BRI Syariah President Director Ventje Rahardjo. About 90% operating cost of a supporting branch goes to employee salary. In the meantime, investment to open an office is not more than IDR600 million.  (source)

“These supporting branches are low cost but they can serve all transactions with focus on micro loans and pawning, as the market is still large and profit margin is high,” he explained on Wednesday.

The sharia bank has the strategy to attach its branches to local offices of religious affairs (KUA), which are located in rural areas and untouched by other banks.

“KUA is the representative office of Ministry of Religious Affairs in districts. The surrounding people are potential market for banks,” he explained.

The sharia bank, which is a subsidiary of state-controlled Bank Rakyat Indonesia, has 105 branch offices. In addition, the bank has office channeling in 60 branches of its parent company.

Ventje exposed that the bank expects its assets grow by 46% to IDR16 trillion. Moreover, it predicts credit disbursement at IDR15 trillion, increasing 66.6% from the expected IDR9 trillion at end of the year.

Exceeding target

The expected target exceeds the prediction by Bank Indonesia on sharia banks in 2012. Earlier, Bank Indonesia Director Mulya Siregar expressed that the sharia banking industry could grow 40% next year.

With 4,500 employees in all branches, Ventje seemed optimistic that the target will be reached. Moreover, BRI Syariah has sufficient capital to achieve the target.

“Most of our employees handle marketing and we still have big capacity in production. We have used not more than 20% capacity,” he explained.

Concerning retail and consumer credits, BRI Syariah will double portfolio. In micro financing, it expects to disburse IDR2.4 trillion, compared to the predicted IDR1.2 trillion at end of the year.

Moreover, real estate financing will be boosted to IDR2.8 trillion, doubling the predicted IDR1.2 trillion this year.

Provided such performance target, the bank expects profit to increase three times than this year’s achievement. “This year we expect profit of IDR50 billion,” he said.

BRI Syariah is the joining of PT Bank Jasa Arta and Sharia Unit of Bank Rakyat Indonesia. The sharia bank had asset under management of IDR1.5 trillion and 300 employees when it was launched in November 17, 2008.

The bank now has its assets grown seven times to IDR10.6 trillion in not more than three years. This makes BRI Syariah the third largest sharia bank in Indonesia by assets after PT Bank Syariah Mandiri and PT Bank Muamalat Indonesia Tbk.  (DONALD BANJARNAHOR & HERY TRIANTO) (T04/msw)
