TAIWAN - HALAL - Taiwan promotes 'Muslim Friendly' certification of restaurants

www.focustaiwan.tw - Taipei, Feb. 24 (CNA) The Tourism Bureau has joined with the Taipei-based Chinese Muslim Association since the beginning of the year to promote the certification of restaurants in Taiwan as being friendly to Muslims.

The new measure was taken amid an increase of visitors from Muslim-dominant areas in China, Malaysia and Indonesia to Taiwan in recent years, said Lin Kun-yuan, head of the international affairs division of the bureau. (source)

He hoped that there would be at least 50 restaurants certified as Muslim-friendly by the end of this year.

The certification process is part of efforts made to attract more Muslim travelers to visit Taiwan for pleasure, the Tourism Bureau said.

According to official statistics, the number of visitors from Malaysia to Taiwan reached 280,000 people in 2010, up by 71 percent from the previous year, while the number from Indonesia was 120,000, up by 16 percent.

The figures represented interesting commercial opportunities, the bureau said.

On Friday, five restaurants, including the Shangrila Leisure Farm in Yilan County and the Italian restaurant at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Kaohsiung were certified as Muslim friendly.

The Chinese Muslim Association, which has been commissioned to handle the certification process, said that to win certification, restaurants must serve dishes with Halal-certified ingredients and use wet towels or napkins without traces of alcohol.
