INDONESIA - BANKING - Bank Pensiunan to acquire Bank Sahabat; central bank says

JAKARTA: PT Bank Tabungan Pensiunan Nasional Tbk, a joint venture bank controlled by Northstar Pacific and Texas Pacific Group, is reportedly to acquire PT Bank Sahabat Purba Danarta to run sharia lending business.

“Bank Tabungan plans to acquire a Central Java-based bank in 2012. Subsequent to this acquisition, the bank will be converted into sharia bank and its existing sharia unit will be merged into it,” said Mulya Siregar, Bank Indonesia Sharia Banking Director today. (source)

Based on Bisnis’ investigation, it is Bank Sahabat Purba Danarta that Mulya refers to. The bank is currently owned by TP Rahmat, Astra Internasional former president director. TP Rahmat now focuses more on plantation sector through Tri Putra Group.

Mulya said BTPN has addressed this notion to the central bank few weeks ago. “It is now being processed for approval. Bank Tabungan probably finds it more effective to acquire local bank to foster sharia business unit before creating a sharia bank,” he explained.

Bank Sahabat Corporate Secretary Yenni declined to comment in this information. “Our directors are still busy, thus they cannot being interviewed for now,” she told Bisnis.

Bank Tabungan Deputy President Director Ongky Wanadjati Dana and Bank Tabungan Compliance Director Anika Faisal did not reply confirmation sent by Bisnis via short message. (20/t02/ags)
