INDONESIA - BANKING - Islamic Banking Need to Prepare the MEA Infrastructure

INVESTOR DAILY INDONESIA  - JAKARTA - The Islamic banking in Indonesia will need to prepare supporting infrastructure in the face of the ASEAN Economic Community (MEA) in 2015.
"Infrastructure services include ease of payment and transaction-related business activity in real time with adequate technology and integrated network," said Director of the Directorate of Islamic Banking Bank Indonesia (BI), E Mulya Siregar, said here on Wednesday. (source)
Ease of payment, according to Mulya, became the main capital of Islamic banks to be able to retain customers and gain market share of Islamic banking is greater.
"Preparation and availability of technology that would need financial support not less. In fact, assets of Islamic banking in Indonesia is still relatively small so that the availability of funds for banks are not conventional or Islamic banking neighboring countries," Mulya said.
Based on data of BI, the assets of the largest Islamic bank in Indonesia is still below Rp40 trillion, while the biggest Islamic bank in Malaysia has assets of about U.S. $ 20 billion, or Rp170 trillion.
Mulya said Indonesia has a market so large and open than other countries in ASEAN. "The Muslim community in the ASEAN region which became the major market segments of Islamic banking in Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei and Singapore, while in Thailand and the Philippines are still a little," Mulya said.
ASEAN Economic Community has four main characteristics, namely the creation of a single market and production base unit, competitive economic region, the region's economic growth equitably, and the area integrated with global region. (Gor / ant)

JAKARTA - Perbankan syariah di Indonesia perlu mempersiapkan infrastruktur penunjang dalam menghadapi Masyarakat Ekonomi ASEAN (MEA) pada 2015.

"Infrastruktur tersebut antara lain kemudahan jasa pembayaran dan aktivitas usaha terkait transaksi real time dengan teknologi yang memadai dan jaringan terintegrasi," kata Direktur Direktorat Perbankan Syariah Bank Indonesia (BI), Mulya E Siregar, di Jakarta, Rabu.

Kemudahan pembayaran itu, menurut Mulya, menjadi modal utama agar bank syariah mampu mempertahankan nasabah dan meraih pangsa pasar perbankan syariah yang lebih besar.

"Persiapan dan ketersediaan teknologi itu tentu butuh dukungan dana yang tidak sedikit. Padahal, aset perbankan syariah di Indonesia masih relatif kecil sehingga ketersediaan dananya tidak sebesar perbankan konvensional ataupun perbankan syariah negara tetangga," kata Mulya.

Berdasarkan data BI, aset bank syariah terbesar di Indonesia masih di bawah Rp40 triliun, sedangkan bank syariah terbesar di Malaysia mempunyai aset sekitar US$20 miliar atau Rp170 triliun.

Mulya mengatakan Indonesia memiliki pasar yang begitu besar dan terbuka dibanding negara lain di ASEAN. "Komunitas muslim di kawasan ASEAN yang menjadi segmen pasar perbankan syariah utama ada di Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei dan Singapura, sementara di Thailand dan Filipina masih sedikit," kata Mulya.

Masyarakat Ekonomi ASEAN memiliki empat karakteristik utama, yaitu penciptaan pasar tunggal dan kesatuan basis produksi, kawasan ekonomi berdaya saing, kawasan pertumbuhan ekonomi merata, dan kawasan terintegrasi dengan kawasan global. (gor/ant)
