EVENTS - Education Strength Seminar Islamic Economic Development Seminar Series No.5

While the development of Islamic Banking and Finance has seen tremendous growth not only in Malaysia but the world over, Islamic Economics as a discipline has been playing a catch up role. And yet, if Islamic Banking and Finance is to make a real difference,   it has to fit in within a larger and more established framework of Islamic Economics and be guided by the principles of maqasid shariah or the objectives of Islamic Law.

How would an understanding of a maqasid type of economic development contribute towards a new transformed economy that is not only “people’s first” but also sustainable and more efficient? This presentation will discuss the basic meaning of Islamic Economics and the principles of maqasid shariah and argues for a case that a real economic transformation requires a paradigm shift of the fundamentals. Rebranding and new labels soon get out of fashion but true essence remains relevant and pertinent. Here, the maqasid shariah offers some refreshing perspectives for the building of a new economic civilization that is more just and humane.
