BAHRAIN - SPEECHES - Indonesia - Bahrain: Exploring Smart Partnership on Islamic Banking and Finance

www.bma.gov.bh - Indonesia -  Bahrain: Exploring Smart Partnership on Islamic Banking and Finance

Manama, Bahrain: 14th May 2012

Opening Address by: Mr. A. Rahman Al-Baker, Executive Director of Financial Institutions Supervision, Central Bank of Bahrain

Your Excellencies, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen - Good Morning.

Central Bank of BahrainI am honoured to be here today to speak to you at this seminar in a spirit of partnership and brotherhood. Our two nations are both very similar and yet hugely different. We are both identified as Muslim nations, and yet we both have other religious groups existing alongside the Muslim majority. Indonesia is a vast nation, with a population in excess of 238 million people, whilst Bahrain has a population of only just over 1 million people. Indonesia is a founder member of ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations), as Bahrain is a founder member of the GCC. These are both major economic blocs within their regions. Within ASEAN, Indonesia is the largest country by population and GDP. Within the GCC, Bahrain is the home of modern Islamic banking and finance. (source)

MALAYSIA - SPEECH - Governor's Keynote Address at the Islamic Financial Intelligence Summit (IFIS) 2011- "The New Islamic Finance Landscape"

This speech refers to the IFSB-IDB Task Force of Islamic Finance and Global Financial Stability Report (April 2010) that can be accessed here.

This decade has witnessed dramatic changes in the Islamic financial landscape. As a dynamic industry, Islamic finance is responding to the forces of change emanating from the changing requirements of the real economy, the changing pattern and pace of globalisation and the wide spread financial reforms being undertaken at both the international and national levels.  This transformation of the Islamic financial system is also taking place during the most challenging of times as the world enters the fifth year of the global financial crisis. A central aspect of the new Islamic financial landscape is also the increased focus on financial stability to enhance further its potential as a form of financial intermediation in an increasingly more challenging environment.  (source)

EVENTS - SPEECH - Dr. Halim Alimsyah - Deputy Governor BI - Seminar Tahun Tentang Outlook Perbankan Syariah 2011" - Nov 24, 2010

UK - EVENTS -SPEECH - Deputy Governor's Keynote Address at the ISRA-IIBI 2nd Annual International Thematic Workshop 2010: "The Polemics of Governing Law in Islamic Finance"

Speaker : Dato' Muhammad bin Ibrahim
Venue : The Thomson Reuters Building, London
Date : 29 November 2010
Language : English

Let me first thank the organizers for inviting me to speak at this ISRA-IIBI 2nd Annual International Thematic Workshop 2010. Although I very much regret not being able to be in London in person, I am thankful for the many advances of modern technology for the opportunity to briefly address all of you this morning. I am also happy to note that this event is a continuation of international collaboration between the organizers, the International Shariah Research Academy for Islamic Finance (ISRA), the Institute of Islamic Banking and Insurance (IIBI) and Thomson Reuters, following the success of the inaugural workshop held last year. The theme of this year's workshop, 'The Polemics of Governing Law in Islamic Finance: Recent Developments and the Way Forward', is most apt. With the emergence of Islamic finance as a new growth area in the global financial landscape, this Workshop provides an excellent forum to exchange views and information on topical legal issues in Islamic finance. As Islamic financial activities are increasingly crossing national boundaries, it is critical for more such dialogues to take place at an international level, in order to gain wider perspectives that can contribute to the development of a legal framework for Islamic finance that is internationally facilitative.
