INDONESIA - EVENTS - Government Seriously Develops Indonesian Islamic Financial Industry

www.depkeu.go.id - Jakarta, 20/6/2012 MoF(Fiscal) News - Opening the International Conference on Islamic Capital Market in Jakarta on Tuesday, Vice Minister of Finance I Anny Ratnawati conveyed that the government of Indonesia commits to develop Sharia financial industry as a part of national economic development. This commitment is reflected in the development of Islamic investment products (State Islamic Securities/Sukuk), which are periodically issued by the government through Ministry of Finance.
She explained, the development of Sharia investment products is higher than the conventional ones since the issuance of law and regulations related to the Islamic financial industry in 2008. “The amount of sukuk issued by the government on December 31, 2008 was only USD429 million. Yet, it increased by 1.898 percent to USD8.57 billion on December 31, 2011,” she said. Meanwhile, the amount of the government bonds increased of around 49 percent from USD82.35 billion to USD122.40 billion in the same period. Therefore, she welcomed investors’ enthusiasm in each Sharia investment product issued. (source)

INDONESIA - CAPITAL MARKETS - Indonesia eyes the role as Asian sukuk hub

WWW.REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Government is expected to develop Indonesian sukuk market and boost Indonesian role as a hub for Asian sukuk. The project sukuk for infrastructure financing is planned to be issued on the second semester.
The Director General of Debts Management in the Ministry of Finance, Rahmat Waluyanto, mentioned that issuing local currency sukuk is among government’s measures to improve Indonesian sukuk market.
"Besides that, we can use state sukuk as monetary instrument and source of IDR," Waluyanto said on Monday.  (source)

International Conference on Islamic Capital Market in 2012 was held in cooperation between the Capital Market Supervisory Agency and Financial Institution Supervisory Agency (Bapepam-LK) by the Islamic Research and Training Institute, Islamic Development Bank (IDB-IRTI).
2. The purpose of this conference is to learn more Islamic capital market role in the Islamic financial system and how it impacts on the increased investment, market stability, and an equitable socio-economic development. 
3. In addition, the conference is to be one potential means to introduce Islamic capital market in Indonesia to the international community in developing and strengthening relations between the Islamic capital market regulator Bapepam-LK as with other state regulators and market participants
4. Furthermore, the main focus of this conference is to discuss current matters relating to Development and prospect; Market Reform and Infrastructure Development: Regulatory aspect of Islamic capital markets; and Strategy for development of capital market products for public sector financing. CAMBODIA - BANKING - Financing Cambodia’s Muslims

www.phnompenhpost.com - Islamic finance could help to boost trade between Cambodia and the Middle East, as well as attract investment from Muslim-majority countries, experts said on Saturday.

Knowledge of Islamic finance and banking, which bars interest lending and discourages unfair trade advantages, is almost nonexistent among Cambodia’s Muslims, which comprise about 2 per cent of the country’s population.

But demand for halal business practices is increasing in Malaysia and Middle Eastern countries, according to insiders. (source)

MALAYSIA - OPINION - TAKAFUL - Time to move to takaful 2.0

A conference on the future and expansion of takaful, called Takaful Rendezvous 2011, took place in Malaysia under the banner of Kuala Lumpur Islamic Finance Forum (KLIFF) from October 4 to 6. Although the industry has come far in a short period of time, more needs to be done.
Much like the $640-billion (Dh2.35 trillion) halal industry, takaful needs to rise and address some of the challenges on size, representative industry body, and perception.  (source)

INDONESIA - BANKING - Assets Islamic Banks reach Rp. 109.75 trillion in June 2011

Jakarta (2 / 8) - Growth of Islamic banking in this country shows a good improvement. Proved the final position of total Islamic banking assets by June 2011 reached Rp 109.75 trillion, with a market share above 3.3 percent. INDONESIA - EVENTS - IAEI Suggests Five Important Things Promote Islamic Economics

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Association of Islamic Economics (IAEI) advise the five important things to advance the Islamic economy country. This was stated in the IAEI Conference that was held last weekend.
One member of IAEI, Agustianto Mingka, said first point related to the development of human resources in Islamic finance. "During this time HR really understand about Islamic finance is still lacking," he told Reuters. (source)

INDONESIA - EVENTS - TAKAFUL - The potential for Takaful Indonesia unexploited

Jakarta (21 / 7). Takaful industry in Indonesia has huge market potential. But until now this potential has not been explored to the fullest. Proved up to now only 4 percent of premiums earned Takaful overall insurance premiums in Indonesia. Yet research by 85 percent of consumers would consider purchasing insurance products sharia.
Related to this, an insurance consulting firm Pointer Insurance Consulting, today held an international conference entitled "Islamic Insurance in Indonesia" at Hotel Le Meridien Jakarta. (source)

INDONESIA - EVENTS - International Conference of Islamic Insurance : Takaful Not to Touch the Upper Crust

Jakarta (22 / 7). Takaful Growth in Indonesia does look good but the assets under management are still relatively small. This happens because the Takaful market is still in the middle to lower.

President Director of Busines Consulting Karim, Karim Anwar Adiwarman revealed that Takaful policyholders in Indonesia is three million people and the average monthly payment policy stands at 150 thousand per month with an income of about 3.5 million policyholders per month. (source)

INDONESIA - BANKING - Maybank To Increase Branches In Indonesia To 450 Over Next Two Years

KUALA LUMPUR, July 22 (Bernama) -- Malayan Banking Bhd (Maybank) plans to increase its branches under the group in Indonesia to 450 over the next two years from the present 330.

President/Chief Executive Officer Datuk Seri Abdul Wahid Omar said the plan was in sync with the bank's focus to expand in the Asean region, particularly Indonesia, Singapore and the Philippines.

"We have defined our focus which is Asean. We will concentrate on that. (source)

INDONESIA - EVENTS - HIGH LEVEL CONFERENCE - Body to push cross-border handling of Islamic bank services urged

THE Association of Islamic Banking Malaysia (AIBIM) and Indonesian Syariah Banking Association (ASBISINDO) need to set up an industry task force on joint development of cross-border Islamic liquidity management products suitable for both Malaysia and Indonesia.

In a joint statement yesterday, the associations said this was decided at one of the specialised workshops held in conjunction with the Joint High Level Conference in Islamic Finance, organised by Bank Negara Malaysia and Bank Indonesia in Jakarta last week.  (source)
